Modelling the localised response of a subsea cable subjected to impact

Subsea power cables are integral to the offshore energy industry. The consideration of risks associated with a cable’s intended route will include the level and type of vessel activity in the area, with design mitigations such as trenching likely to be incorporated to protect cables.

However, with 70% of all cable failures caused by fishing and anchoring activities, risk mitigations are not always successful. There are currently no applicable standards available that provide guidance for assessing the impact between cables and vessel activity.

AgileTek Engineering has developed a methodology to assess the response of a cable subjected to impact, combining an analytical, global, and local assessment of an impact scenario to determine the interlayer response of a cable at the impact location.
